PISA reports both the difficulty of questions and the proficiency of test-takers on a single continuous scale (Figure I.2.1), based on item-response theory models (see Annex A1). By showing the difficulty of each question on this scale, it is possible to locate the level of proficiency in the subject that the question demands. The latest Pisa survey from December 2019 was a joy message for the Swedish school. The results showed that Swedish students performed better than the OECD average in both mathematics and science and reading comprehension. The 2018 PISA assessment showed a positive trend for Sweden’s educational quality, with Sweden’s 15-year-olds scoring above the OECD average in mathematics, reading and science.
